I did an upgrade to kernel 2.6.29 and debian sid at the same time. Network failed. I found out about the udev bug and tried fixing that. I even managed to do it after lots of tobacco and coffee. And the network still failed.

Having exhausted my skills I installed again, going from etch -> lenny -> testing, figuring that would work. I installed the new kernel. The network failed. *facepalm*. Lesson learnt, don’t do too many things at the same time and at least remember the changes you did. I’m used to new kernels fixing things and not breaking them. I’ll see what 2.6.29.1 is like, since I need it for ext4.

The network card was a integrated nvidia using forcedeth.
